Moving & transporting objects
- The Museum and Gallery Commission (now Museums Libraries and Archives Council) ‘Standards in the museum care of collections' series contains some useful general information relating to different aspects of moving objects. Get advice on handing and inspection and moving large objects here.
Location and Movement Control
MDA produces a number of resources related to this subject:
- Location and movement control (MDA)
- SPECTRUM Procedure: Location and movement control (MDA)
- SPECTRUM Procedure: Object exit (MDA)
- SPECTRUM Procedure: Loans out (MDA)
Transport beyond your own institution
Standards for exchanging exhibitions (MLA & Touring Exhibitions Group) is an extremely useful set of quick checklists and more detailed guidelines on all aspects of organising, lending to or hosting touring exhibitions. It has a number of sections relevant to moving and transporting collections:
- Packing exhibits: Guidelines and notes
- Moving exhibits: Guidelines and notes
- Couriers: Guidelines and notes
- Carriers: Guidelines and notes
Go to Standards for exchanging exhibitions.
The standard is in four parts, A - D, each subdivided to cover a specific aspect of work. Each sub-section is divided in to three parts to reflect the distinct role played by the lender, organiser and venue. The accompanying guidelines and notes are common to all three parties. Cross-references point to other sections where appropriate.
Courier guidelines
These practical guidelines are written from the lender's perspective. They cover the administering of object loans to an exhibition and are aimed at all people who either organise or carry out courier duties primarily in the context of the fine arts. They are also intended to be widely relevant to the care and transit of a range of objects for any purpose, be they loans or acquisitions.
