How does your museum engage with its audiences? Do you use social media to reach and engage with new audiences?

Understanding social media marketing is essential for museums in the 21st century. This workshop will show you how you can listen to and engage with audiences online, and consider some of the challenges involved in running effective campaigns.

Building on his provocative and booked-out presentation at the Museums and the Web conference in Montreal this year, Seb explores how to justify new communications strategies to your directors and how to set specific aims for each campaign.

Seb will give an overview of his work at the Powerhouse, looking at how they have made their collections central to their online activities. He will also look at ways of maximizing a collection's exposure and leveraging curators' ongoing research work.

Who is the day for?
This session is aimed at anyone working in the planning, managing, creating or curating of online collections or cultural websites from within the museums, archives, galleries or library sectors. The day is not aimed at technical staff – the presentations won't focus on the minutiae of technical methods.

What will you get from the day?
•  Practical ideas about ways to make your digital collections more accessible
•  An understanding of the changing nature of online publishing
•  Evidence to argue for investment in online services within your organisation
•  Ideas and strategies for building sustainable online audiences
