Copyright for Collections
Why Do Collection Holders Need to Understand Copyright?
As creators of texts and consumers of images, guardians of art works, and holders of copyrighted assets, cultural organisations interact with copyright law on various levels.
In particular collection holders need to know the copyright status of all their holdings in order to:
- Ensure that they can freely reproduce the works that they own;
- Maximise the commercial potential of their holdings;
- Respect the rights of other individuals and organisations.
Once the status of the works is known, collection holders will need to:
- Monitor the fulfilment of legal obligations;
- Manage the process of granting new permissions;
- Manage permissions which have been granted in the past.
