- The governance of the collection that the works belong to - for example whether it is a state/government collection or a private collection;
- When the work was created and by whom
- Whether the work has ever been published, and if so by whom;
- Whether the creator of the work is an employee or a freelancer;
- Whether the work was commissioned;
- Whether copyright has subsequently been assigned or a licence to reproduce granted.
Once these factors have been assessed, some further research may be needed to determine the rights status of the works. Please see below for resources that will help you to take this further.
