Organise Displays and Exhibitions
Providing good quality displays and exhibitions, whether permanent or temporary, is one of a museum's key roles. Often they embody its message and are usually the most direct way of providing public access to objects and the information associated with them, whilst also safeguarding the material being shown.
Permanent displays
The following factsheets provide general guidance for the display of all types of materials.
- Choosing New Display Cases (SMC)
- The Effects of Storage and Display Materials on Museum Objec (SMC)
- Conservation and Lighting (SMC)

- Display Case Supplement

Temporary exhibitions
- Loans (MGC) on Collections Link offers basic guidance on lending to other institutions. It is based on original work by Dr Patricia Andrew for the Museums and Galleries Commission (now Museums, Libraries and Archives Council) series ‘Standards in the museum care of collections'.
Exchanging exhibitions
Standards for exchanging exhibitions was commissioned by MLA from the Touring Exhibitions Group and the work completed in March 2006. It is an extremely useful set of quick checklists and more detailed guidelines on all aspects of organising, lending to or hosting touring exhibitions. It is equally applicapable to loans involving hundreds of objects as it is to just one.
Go to Standards for exchanging exhibitions.
The standard is in four parts, A - D, each subdivided to cover a specific aspect of work. Each sub-section is divided in to three parts to reflect the distinct role played by the lender, organiser and venue. The accompanying guidelines and notes are common to all three parties. Cross-references point to other sections where appropriate.
