Reviewing Significance - Introduction

Assessing the significance of museum collections is increasingly being recognised as an integral element of strategic collections management work, and essential when prioritising resource allocation and seeking external funding or support.

Reviewing Significance provides tools to aid museums and archives of all sizes in the processes of:

  • Assessing the significance of collections
  • Assessing the current and potential use of collections
  • Assessing current collections care and preservation conditions

The Significance Assessment tools guide museums through the process of assessingthe significance of individual objects or entire collections against a range of criteria. This enables pre-eminent collections with local as well as national resonance to be identified, and provides evidence to support decisions on resource allocation, collections development, acquisition and disposal and funding applications.

The Collections Review tools enable the care and use of collections to be quickly, efficiently and systematically surveyed. The data produced is designed to support
strategic planning, identifying hotspots for curatorial intervention as well as highlighting collections with greater potential for use in display, community engagement or marketing.
